I am taking my last class, Abstract and Interpretation, at the Academy of Art University before presenting for my Masters in Fine Art. I’ve always struggled when it comes to abstraction so this is the perfect class to teach me to loosen up. Here’s my first assignment, a back and white abstraction of a simple glass still life. The painting looks like the glass is melting.
I’ve tried to focus more on the compositional elements in my paintings without the relying so heavily on color as the focal point. Here is a small study I did using only black and white. It was an interesting experiment that really made me concentration on the structure and arrangement of objects in my work. However, I don’t think I am ready to give up color in my work yet.
